【本報訊】連接香港島上環至堅尼地城的西港島線已經完成62%工程，全長3公里長的地下行車隧道宣佈全線貫通，工程動用了隧道鑽挖機，以及威力相當於8級地震的480噸炸藥。新鐵路將會如期於2014年通車，由堅尼地城站往尖沙嘴只需14分鐘。

下階段開始鋪路軌

港鐵昨天舉行西港島線隧道貫通典禮，宣佈3公里長的行車隧道已經貫通，下階段將展開鋪路軌、裝置機電設施和裝修等工程。由上環至西營盤一段隧道用隧道鑽挖機施工，西營盤至堅尼地城一段則由於較深入地層，石質亦較堅硬，所以需要採用爆破方式施工。工程合共動用了約480噸炸藥，進行了2460次爆破。
港鐵高級建造工程師鄭啟聖指出，西港島線工程是本港鐵路工程中最複雜的一次，因要穿過密集的民居地底，港鐵在沿線民居安裝了大量監察器，確保爆破不會影響民居。
西港島線的堅尼地城總站採用明挖回填方式興建，明年3月結構工程完成後，地面會復修為一個公園。總站有一條650米長的列車掉頭隧道，供列車掉頭駛回上環方向，隧道可停泊3輛列車，當有列車發生故障，可暫時停泊隧道內。
